Will adding an additional crossbar increase the load rating?

Adding an extra crossbar may help distribute weight more evenly across your roof, but it does not increase the official load rating of your roof rack or vehicle. All load ratings are determined by the manufacturer and are based on the structural limits of your vehicle’s roof and the rack system - not the number of crossbars installed.

Even with additional bars, you must still adhere to the lower of the following two limits:

  • The maximum load rating of your vehicle's roof (consult your vehicle’s manual).
  • The maximum load rating of your roof rack system (specified by the rack manufacturer).

Overloading can compromise safety, handling, and the integrity of your vehicle and rack, so it's important to stay within the specified limits.
