Will a ski/rod holder affect fuel economy?

Will a ski/rod holder affect fuel economy?

Any roof-mounted accessory, even when empty, adds wind resistance (aerodynamic drag) and can slightly increase fuel consumption, especially at highway speeds. The actual impact will depend on factors like the size and shape of the holder, whether it’s loaded, and the vehicle type. In most cases, you might notice a modest drop in efficiency when carrying gear.

To help minimise fuel impact:

  • Remove the holder when it's not in use.
  • Keep gear securely fastened to reduce drag.
  • Consider more aerodynamic models if you're frequently transporting gear.

While the fuel economy change is usually minor, removing roof-mounted accessories when not needed is a simple way to reduce long-term fuel use and wind noise.
