Tips for reducing wind noise on your platform

While roof platforms and trays offer excellent practicality and versatility, they do tend to generate more wind noise compared to standard cross bars. Fortunately, there are several ways to reduce this noise through the effectiveness and availability of these solutions will vary depending on the platform brand and your specific vehicle. Here are a few common options:

1. Wind Fairings

Wind fairings are one of the most effective and straightforward solutions for reducing wind noise. Many leading brands, including Frontrunner, Tracklander, Wedgetail, and Rhino Rack, either include a fairing as standard or offer it as an optional accessory. In some cases, fairings are vehicle-specific, so it’s worth checking whether a compatible version is available for your 4WD. While a fairing can significantly reduce wind noise, it may not eliminate it completely.

2. Repositioning the Platform

On certain vehicles and with specific rack systems, it may be possible to reposition the platform slightly further back on the roof. This can shift the noise-generating airflow away from the driver and passenger area, reducing the sound inside the cabin. While not all brands support this flexibility, Yakima’s LockNLoad platform is particularly well-suited to this approach. Check with your platform’s manufacturer to see if repositioning is a viable option.

3. Light Bars

Mounting a light bar underneath the front edge of your platform can serve a dual purpose: enhancing nighttime visibility and reducing wind noise. The light bar helps by filling the gap between the platform and the roof, disrupting airflow that typically causes whistling or humming at speed.
