Rear-Mounted Bike Racks

If your roof bars are already occupied, perhaps with a roof box, and you're not considering a tow bar-mounted carrier, a rear-mounted bike rack can be a practical alternative. Also known as boot-mounted or rear door-mounted racks, these systems are often a more affordable way to carry two or three bikes, as they don’t require roof bars or a tow bar setup.

That said, it’s essential to ensure your vehicle is suitable for this type of rack. Rear-mounted carriers clamp onto the bodywork, so compatibility depends on the shape and design of your boot or tailgate. For example, vehicles with rear spoilers are generally not suitable for rear-mounted racks.

The Thule Outway is the standout in this category, offering excellent build quality, secure bike holding, and ease of installation. However, we strongly recommend contacting our Support Team to confirm whether it’s compatible with your specific vehicle.

For bikes without a traditional crossbar, such as step-through frames, ladies' bikes, or children’s bikes, we also advise using a frame adapter to ensure a secure and level fit.
