How do I secure a roof box against theft?

We understand that peace of mind is essential when travelling with valuable gear. While roof boxes are generally secure, there are several steps you can take to help protect both the box and its contents from theft:

Most premium roof boxes, such as those from Thule, Yakima and Rhino-Rack, include a locking system. This means the box cannot be opened without the key if it is fully closed and locked, offering both convenience and added security. Always double-check that the box is locked before leaving your vehicle.

Securing the contents is one thing, but just as important is preventing the box itself from being removed. Many modern roof boxes use lockable mounting systems, which fasten directly to your roof bars. For example, Thule’s PowerClick or FastGrip systems include built-in locks to secure the box to your roof racks. Ensure these are locked after installation.

We recommend avoiding leaving high-value or easily portable items such as electronics, passports, or wallets in the roof box when your vehicle is unattended. Although the box may be secure, it's still best to keep valuables inside the vehicle or with you.

If you’re using or considering a specific model, our team will be happy to confirm whether it includes locking features or recommend compatible security upgrades for added protection. Just let us know your setup, and we’ll guide you through it!
