Hitch mounted bike racks
Hitch-mounted bike racks are among the most convenient and secure ways to transport bikes on a vehicle. They offer excellent stability, are easy to load and unload, and pose minimal risk of damaging your car. However, these do require a receiver hitch to be installed. If your vehicle doesn’t already have one, this is something that can be installed by a professional.
Once your vehicle is equipped with a hitch and you know how many bikes you need to carry, the next step is selecting the right type of rack for your specific bikes. For standard road or hybrid bikes, most hitch racks will suffice. However, if you own e-bikes, mountain bikes, or bikes with unconventional frame designs, it’s best to avoid racks that secure bikes by the frame. Instead, opt for a model that supports bikes by the wheels to ensure a better fit and prevent potential damage.
Here are a couple of our favourite hitch-mounted bike racks:
- Yakima's Evo HoldUp 2 is an awesome hitch mount. The KickStart feature allows you to tilt the rack away from your car, even with the bikes loaded. An extra 2-bike adapter is available, allowing you to carry four bikes in total. Note that with the add-on installed, the rack becomes quite heavy, so you may need assistance when attaching or removing it.
- Thule's T2 Pro XTR is another excellent option. Known for its high-quality construction and thoughtful features, this rack also supports an optional two-bike extension for up to four bikes total. Its robust design ensures secure transport, while its tool-free installation and user-friendly tilt mechanism make it a favourite among cyclists. With Thule’s reputation for quality, you can trust this rack to protect your bikes.
