Do I need crossbars or a platform to mount a fishing rod or snow/ski holder?

If you’re planning to install a fishing rod or snow/ski holder on your vehicle, it’s important to understand that compatibility will depend on the type of roof rack system you have in place. Different holders use various mounting methods, so selecting the right option starts with your setup.

Many fishing rod and snow/ski holders use a T-track mounting system, which is commonly compatible with most aero or wing-style crossbars, as well as some heavy-duty (HD) bars and platform racks with slats running east–west. For platforms with north–south slats, an accessory bar such as the Rhino-Rack accessory bar may be required to provide a suitable mounting point.

Alternatively, clamp-style holders offer broader compatibility and are designed to fit a wide range of crossbar profiles, including aero/wing, square, and some heavy-duty (HD) bars. That said, always refer to the holder’s product specifications and your roof rack’s guidelines to ensure a secure and proper fit.

If your vehicle isn’t yet equipped with a roof rack system, you’ll need to install either crossbars or a compatible platform first. A correctly installed system not only ensures the safe transport of your gear but it also enhances your overall travel experience with added convenience and peace of mind.
