Can any vehicle support a rooftop tent?

Not every car can support a rooftop tent. This is due to some cars not having the load rating to support a rooftop tent - this will include small hatchback cars such as the Hyundai Getz, Suzuki Swift, Kia Picanto etc. Additionally, it is important to ensure your roof rack system is mounted to the correct roof type/tub to ensure the tent is secure at all times.

Most rooftop tents weigh anywhere between 45kg-100kg. It is important to install a rooftop tent on a vehicle that has the roof load rating which allows for a rooftop tent, the correct rack system to suit and a  vehicle that also has a static rating, high enough to include the weight of being in the tent.

For example, dual-cab utes and wagon 4WD’s are the most popular option for rooftop tents to be mounted to - this is due to these vehicles having a higher dynamic rating of around 80-150kg depending on the vehicle, compared to a small hatchback, or small sedan.
