Are awnings waterproof?

As awnings are designed for the outdoors,  most are water-resistant, meaning they’ll protect you from light to moderate rain without issue. However, it’s important to know that not all awnings are fully waterproof, and their performance in wet conditions depends on the materials, build quality, and how they’re set up.

Most quality awnings from trusted brands like Darche, Rhino-Rack and CampBoss are made from heavy-duty fabrics such as ripstop polycotton canvas or polyester blends. These materials are often coated with PU (polyurethane) to help water bead off rather than soak through.

A key measure of weather protection is the fabric weight, often listed as GSM (grams per square metre). The higher the GSM, the thicker and more durable the fabric. For example:

  • Darche uses up to 320 gsm ripstop canvas, built tough for rugged conditions.
  • Rhino-Rack awnings also use 280 gsm fabric with a 2000mm waterhead rating, offering solid protection with a lighter weight.
  • CampBoss awnings feature 280 gsm canvas with a 3000mm waterproof rating, ideal for heavy rain.

But even the best fabric can struggle if water pools. That’s why the correct setup is just as important as the fabric itself. Always angle one side of your awning slightly lower to allow rain to run off. This prevents sagging and strain, keeping the fabric in top shape.

Once the weather clears, be sure to let your awning dry completely before packing it away. Storing it wet can lead to mould, odours, and damage over time.

In short, while most awnings are not 100% waterproof in extreme weather, high-quality models offer excellent rain protection when set up correctly. If staying dry is a priority for your trips, we’re happy to help you choose the right awning with the fabric strength and water rating to match your adventures.
